Part of our founding concept was to make our studio available for practical education, passing on skills and methods. The studio has to run as a commercial enterprise to enable us to safely house and maintain the large kiln and the other items entrusted to the studio.
Bringing in artists and artisans to work on projects whenever required or possible has been at the heart of what we do. A huge example of this was the Samaj School Stone mosaic project. Another was the Francs Xavier Church Project.
One of the most enjoyed activities we offer are short courses to learn glass cutting, glass mosaic, cutting bottles, dalle de verre, and especially a starter course in jewelry. Individuals or groups come for a four-hour session and, working with our artisans, create an individual piece, usually a ring, earrings, or pendant. This allows individuals to learn new skills and have something to show for the experience. Several of the attendees have come back to take more intensive courses, usually lasting 10 days.
Recently, we had a school party of children aged 6 to 12 years old spending a day at the studio creating small glass mosaics.
We had a work experience student from a Nairobi school who spent a week with us. Amongst the other normal requirements of working in a studio, such as sorting glass rest into containers and painting the steel frames for our dalle de verre tables, we also found she had the capacity to cut glass, so we gave her the opportunity to make a small glass artwork.
In previous years, we have had a mature student who worked in the studio learning glass fusing, and we encouraged him to create a glass mosaic.
Another private student made a glass leaded panel to her own design and a beautiful small relief sculpture. She has since gone on to study art.
The people who learn with us often develop a relationship with the studio where they come and take multiple courses or dive deeper into a particular method.
